Cloud9はDaniel Fiden氏率いるFunPlus Venturesを筆頭とした投資家グループからシリーズA（スタートアップ企業に対する投資方法のひとつ）による大型出資を受けたことを発表しました。
この投資家グループをリードしているFunPlus Venturesはここ最近のモバイルゲーム市場に対する5000万ドル規模の大型投資でも知られていますが、この他にもredditの共同設立者であるAlexis Ohanian氏をはじめ、元NFLのレジェンド、ジョー・モンタナ氏など著名なプロスポーツ選手やプロスポーツチームオーナーといった多数の投資家が名を連ねています。
Cloud9’s investor list includes:
- Tesla board directors Antonio Gracias, Kimbal Musk and investor Bill Lee
- Min Kim and Rob Pardo（元Blizzard社の重鎮） – the co-founders of Bonfire Studios
- Josh Yguado – the co-founder of Jam City
- Todd Boehly – the founder of Eldridge Industries and co-owner of the LA Dodgers
- Rick Thompson – the co-founder of Signia Venture Partners
- Ken Howery – the co-founder of the Founders Fund and his business partner Brian Singerman
- Alexis Ohanian – the co-founder of Reddit
- Joe Montana – San Francisco 49ers Hall of Famer
- Andrew Bogut – NBA center player for the Cleveland Cavaliers
- Chamath Palihapitiya – co-owner of the Golden State Warriors
- Hunter Pence – MLB outfielder for the San Francisco Giants
Cloud9はオーバーウォッチをはじめ、LoL、CS:GO、Dota2、Hearthstoneなど10以上のロスターが所属してる北米屈指のeSports団体です。
今回のアナウンスメントではOverwatch Leagueについては言及されていませんでしたが、元サンフランシスコ49ersのジョー・モンタナ氏、サンフランシスコ・ジャイアンツのハンター・ペンス選手、LAドジャースの共同オーナーであるTodd Boehly氏らが投資グループに名を連ねていることを考えると、サンフランシスコなどのベイエリアを中心とした都市やロサンゼルスなど、カリフォルニア州の大都市圏のスロット獲得を目指していることは容易に想像できます（C9の本拠地はLA）。
大都市圏でのOverwatch参入コストは1500万ドル以上とも噂されていますが、これだけの規模の投資グループとなればそのために必要な資金力は十分に備えているのではないかと思われます。
Overwatch League開幕時にはSan Francisco Cloud9ersなんてチーム名が見られるかもしれませんね。
